- Main article: Season 1
He works next to Elam Ferguson in the cut crew of the Union Pacific Railroad's new transcontinental line. He and Elam are worried when a southerner, Cullen Bohannon, is made their walking boss.
During a difficult day Elam takes William to the water bucket before their designated break time. Foreman Daniel Johnson berates them for breaking the rules. As he closes on them his horse rears and kicks William in the head, killing him.
Elam is upset by the death. He tells Cullen that William was an idealist who believed that the emancipation proclamation would give them a new life. He later kills Johnson in retaliation. ("Pilot")
